''The project helped us to manage our farm better.'' Luciano & Luis Carlos Zanesco from the farm Santa Ana

''Cooperation as the basis for improved market access for family-based coffee farmers in Serra Negra''.

At the start of the project in 2002, approximately 40 producers were supported individually to help improve their agricultural processes. This proved to be successful but with impact limited to the small number of people reached.

In the second phase of the project in 2005, learning groups were established. Training sessions were facilitated by project staff. In addition to learning about agricultural practices, certification by UTZ Certified became the next area of focus. The local processing company, Quota Mille, organised an out-grower scheme of project producers that became certified in 2007. In order to consolidate the results of the project from 2008 onwards, the project has been working to get producers organized into a stable producer organization.

Focus of the project

To help producers get better access to the coffee market with higher profitability through the improvement of product quality and production processes.

Activities

  • Training through Farmer Field Schools (FFS)
  • Implementing certification
  • Assisting producers to organize formally

Results

The quality of the coffee has improved because of better harvesting and drying practices. The efficiency and productivity of the farms have increased because of better fertilisation and pruning methods. Small holders' producers are now UTZ Certified. Producers got used to participating in FFS and are now more active than before within their community, therefore strengthening social coherence.
